Indian national pleads guilty to trying to export red-eared turtles at KLIA

PETALING JAYA : An Indian national pleaded guilty in the Sepang sessions court today to attempting to export 2,578 red-eared turtles at Kuala Lumpur International Airport's Terminal 1 on Tuesday.
Sathaiyan Alagusundaram made the plea after the charge was read to him in Tamil before judge Ahmad Fuad Othman, who set Sept 19 for mention for the sentencing.
No bail was granted for the accused, who was unrepresented, Bernama reported.
Deputy public prosecutor Mas Izzaty Lokman appeared for the prosecution.
Sathaiyan was charged with attempting to export 2,578 red-eared turtles, which are controlled species under the Fifth Schedule of the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010, at KLIA's Terminal 1 at 10.05pm on Aug 5.
He was charged under Section 117(1) of the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010, read with Section 511 of the Penal Code, and faces a fine of up to RM30,000, a maximum one year's jail, or both.
